A 94-year-old human rights lawyer, Margaret Owen, who was arrested for holding a sign in support of Palestine Action, has accused the government of abusing terror law.

The government proscribed Palestine Action last year and the appeal against the ban will be heard at the Supreme Court this week.

In an interview for ‘The Real Question with Shehab Khan’, Owen, a widely acclaimed women’s rights activist who was awarded an OBE for her work, said she had spent months trying to get arrested and had even sent the Metropolitan Police photographs of a placard in her window declaring her support for Palestine Action.

“I just think all of this is affecting everything to do with our justice system. And it’s absolutely shameful that we have allowed this to happen. So I’m really pleased to be part of the arrestees,” she said. “I’ve joined the club.”

Here are some other topics Shehab pressed Owen on in the wide-ranging interview:

  • Her experience of getting arrested

  • Her time living and working in Israel

  • Two-tier justice and the upcoming Supreme Court hearing

  • Her relationship with Ed Miliband’s late mother
