Andy Burnham is under pressure to clarify his relationship with Manchester City’s owners after the club was found guilty of more than 100 breaches of financial rules.

Burnham, who was the mayor of Greater Manchester from 2017 to 2026, met club officials multiple times during that period and sparked controversy when he said he would be “really concerned” if the club’s owners sold up as a result of any penalty they received.

City denies the charges and is appealing, but the club could face the most severe punishment in English football history.

Watch as Zeteo UK’s political editor, Shehab Khan, analyses Burnham’s previous dealings with the City owners, including a £55 million loan that was given to companies controlled by City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, the vice-president and deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, for housing projects in Manchester.

Shehab also quotes Grace Blakeley, who writes in her Zeteo UK column: “The wealth that flooded into Greater Manchester during this time secured Burnham powerful allies among the city’s capitalists, which in turn helped to pave his route to Downing Street.”
