When considering the apocalyptic warnings that artificial intelligence may kill all humans, the Fermi paradox came to mind. Given the unimaginably large size of the universe, so goes the paradox, surely there are many extraterrestrial civilisations: so why have we detected no sign of them?
There are various theories: that aliens are quarantining us until we become less primitive, that interplanetary space travel is impossible, that aliens communicate in ways we cannot detect. But one theory is simply that technologically advanced civilisations destroy themselves. They blow up their climates, they wipe themselves out with deadly weapons – or they create a superintelligence which makes them go extinct.
