Nigel Farage has built his political brand on portraying himself as an anti-establishment outsider taking on Britain’s political elite. But alongside that image, questions about his financial arrangements, wealthy backers, gifts and lack of transparency have surfaced repeatedly over the course of his career.

The latest controversy is the most significant yet. Farage is under investigation by Parliament’s standards watchdog over an alleged failure to declare a £5 million gift from a crypto billionaire, as well as an alleged failure to declare support he received from convicted felon George Cottrell.

With the investigations ongoing, Farage resigned his Clacton seat to fight a fresh by-election. While he denies any wrongdoing, the current investigations are the culmination of years of recurring questions about his financial affairs.

From relatively minor disputes over declarations to investigations into multimillion-pound gifts and support from close associates, this timeline shows how the controversies surrounding Farage’s finances have become progressively more serious over time.

1. Fails to declare donated office space – fined £200

A relatively minor breach, in 2014 the Electoral Commission fined Farage £200 after he failed to declare office space that had been donated to him.
