The prime minister or the King should apologise for Britain’s historical role in the transatlantic slave trade and take steps towards providing reparatory justice, a Labour MP has said.
In an interview for ‘The Real Question with Shehab Khan’, Bell Ribeiro-Addy, who was in Antigua for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, welcomed Andy Burnham saying he was open to apologising but said an apology alone would not be enough.
Ribeiro-Addy, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Afrikan Reparations, said: “When they look back at this debate and see how much we’ve quibbled over even apologising for what the United Nations has called the gravest crime in humanity, they’re going to wonder what it is we were thinking.”
In the interview, Shehab pressed Ribeiro-Addy for her thoughts on:
What reparations could look like beyond just money
The money paid to compensate slave owners
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch’s dismissal of a need for an apology or reparations
