Israel’s future still hangs in the balance after Benjamin Netanyahu failed to secure a parliamentary majority in its hugely consequential general election.
In an interview for ‘The Real Question with Shehab Khan’, Daniel Levy, a former Israeli government adviser, analysed the results and explained why a new government may not mean there’s a change in policy towards Palestinians or the genocide in Gaza.
Arab-led parties did secure an unprecedented number of seats and could help the opposition oust Netanyahu, but Levy said they were aware of what an agreement would bring: “They’re under no illusions about what can be negotiated. Equality is not on the table, ending the occupation is not on the table, ending settlements is not on the table.”
He said any deal would potentially be a chance to “create some breathing space for their community”.
Here are some of the other topics Shehab discussed with Levy:
The prospect of another escalation against Iran, and how Netanyahu could use a security crisis to his advantage
The impact of the UK government’s shift in policy towards Israel and Palestine
Why Levy believes Zionism must be open to debate, and what the future holds for a two-state solution
Whether a change of government would bring meaningful improvements for Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank
